The Peter Clark window is a stunning way to start our campaign to have the beautiful lead light windows of St Johns in Mudgee restored !
Peter, a Mudgee boy, is here is displayed as the undefeatable St George slaying the dragon of war ! His foot is on the green dragon’s throat who is about to breath his last. An angel is offering Peter the crown of eternal glory and Jesus watches over him. Above in the blue sky we see the two planes that crashed in training causing over Brockleworth in the UK causing Peter’s death, at just 22 years of age, a sacrifice to the cause of freedom. Peter was away, training in England and his body was laid to rest in Annan in Scotland, so his parents had this beautiful memorial raised in his honour in the church they both loved and worshipped in.

The beautiful church of St. Lukes in Gulgong is an excellent example of a gothic revival style church constructed of local ‘bluestone’. It was designed by the renowned Sydney architect Edmund Blackett[1], who was originally the Colonial Govt Architect but later moved into private practice becoming the architect for the Church of England among other posts. He designed some outstanding Victorian buildings including Sydney University with its great quadrangle, and St. Andrews Anglican Cathedral in Sydney.
Blacket’s Gulgong church was constructed in 1875 by Messrs Bennett and Beattie. The stone walls were laid by Charles Wain and they feature attached stepped buttresses and dressed stone copings and sills. Clerestory windows in trefoil shape have never been completed. The main nave windows are lancet shaped, and the roof is slate lined with cresting on ridge and Latin cross finials at the apex. An entry porch with bell tower over addresses Bayly Street.
This very significant church is in poor repair after roof flashing have failed. The falling damp that has resulted has caused considerable damage to timber work and rendered walls. These must be dried out after new flashings are installed, then re-rendered.
With the 150 year anniversary coming up this November we are hoping to successfully repair the church, commencing work in August this year to be ready for the celebration.
